Veterans in Entrepreneurship 3x15
Limited Capacity seats available

This 4x10 session will include four people who are either veteran entrepreneurs or supporters of the community. The format for a 4x10 is that each person will speak for 10 minutes with 20 minutes of questions at the end.

Dave Drach
Techstars is one of the world's leading accelerators and has been a long time supporter of veterans and specifically, Patriot Boot Camp, which we just completed here in Phoenix.  As a mentor and speaker in Patriot Boot Camp and with experience in over 30 accelerator programs worldwide, I know how the discipline and skills of veterans translate into competencies for building a business.  I also have seen the challenges that the very same background can bring.  I'll talk about some of the success stories I have seen, how I have seen military skills translate directly into strengths in the entrepreneurial community and I'll discuss the resources available to veterans to get their business off the ground.

Norm Allgood
Great entrepreneurs know how to face the sting.  It is easy to take the accolades, but it is the resiliency that allows for success.  I have yet to meet a veteran that hasn’t had to face the “sting”!  They understand that plans change the minute you announce them and that they need to step up and course correct.  A veteran, like an entrepreneur is accustomed to sleepless nights and the worry that comes with taking care of your people and business, in that order.  As a veteran and an entrepreneur, I am humbled to be asked to share my thoughts and participate in Techstars; one of the world's leading accelerators and Patriot Boot Camp.

Valuing Early Stage Companies
Limited Capacity full

What is it worth? This is probably the most important question an investor and entrepreneur will ask and answer before executing an investment in a company. The answer often leads to the life or death of a deal.

The determination of the value of a company is as much an art as it is science. Mastering both takes experience and knowledge. Renowned angel investor Bill Payne developed the Angel Resource Institute workshop, Valuation of Early Stage Companies to help you conquer the ability to properly value early stage companies.

Valuation of Early Stage Companies is designed to present several key methodologies that he and many other experienced angel investors have found as fundamental approaches to properly valuing early stage companies. They include the –

  • Risk Factor Summation Method
  • Venture Capital Method
  • Scorecard Method

The workshop also presents the importance of portfolio strategies and the role of portfolio returns in the valuation process. Understanding a proper strategy will also help entrepreneurs to properly manage their expectations and gain insight as to why investors value deals the way they do.

Valuation of Early Stage Companies includes energetic presentations, group exercises and case studies. With the right knowledge valuing early stage companies does not have to be difficult and can lead to even greater successful returns.

The content of ARI’s Valuation of Early Stage Companies is based on the experiences and best practices of the Angel Capital Association’s (ACA) 190 member groups that represent approximately 9,000 individual investors. Program attendees have the confidence that ARI’s program content is vetted and solid.

Chris Smith
StorySelling: How to sell with story.
The most powerful thing you have to sell as an entrepreneur is you. Unfortunately, most entrepreneurs do not understand how to tell their story in a powerful way. Chris Smith, Founder of The Campfire Effect will give you a proven formula to help you talk about who you are and what you do in a powerful way

Shawn Pfunder
Live to tell the tale: leveraging story to define yourself and make sh*t happen.
Think you're made of skin, hair, muscle and bone? Think again. You, my friend, are made of stories. They make you who you are. Dreams, hopes, nightmares, beliefs. We daydream nearly eight hours a day. And then we tell stories to ourselves again at night. We're heavily influenced by songs, books, and movies. Don't believe me? Think about the way you drove your car home from the latest Fast and the Furious movie. A little faster. A little sharper. A little more wide-eyed. See what I mean? With that in mind, stories should be more than play, don't you think? If stories influence so much of who we are, we need to get better at recognizing them. We need to get better at telling them. Then we can leverage the power of story in our lives.

Keynote by Jeremy Young: 13 Reasons Why Your Company Culture Sucks and What To Do About It!
Limited Capacity filling up

As a young entrepreneur, Jeremy Young made a promise to himself to never work for anyone but himself. He launched VServers in 1995, a web hosting company that was an early pioneer in virtual server technology. The company was sold to Micron Electronics for $50 million in 1999. Other credits to his name include working with the founders of Omniture (eventually sold to Adobe for $1.8 billion) to co-found Omniture’s predecessor - a web-stats program called “SuperStats”, SimplyFun - a party plan multi-level marketing company and Uberplay - taking the best Euro strategy games and producing them for the American market.

Jeremy launched his latest venture, Tanga.com, in 2006 to liquidate close-out merchandise in a one-deal-per-day format. For two years in a row, Tanga has been named to the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in the U.S. and one of the largest and fastest growing companies in Arizona. This year, Tanga converted to a full-fledged deals marketplace, specializing in matching products to people.

Why Branding Can't Be An Afterthought
Limited Capacity full

It used to be you built your product and the technology was so cool that branding and marketing were afterthoughts, or maybe not thought about at all. But technology is becoming more and more commoditized. So like in any commoditized market, branding becomes more and more important. We'll talk about this and how it plays into the more modern way of building and launching products (think Slack & Mailchimp).

Startup Filmmaking: How We Financed and Produced "There and Back", a 2016 Feature Film
Limited Capacity seats available

"There and Back," a family road trip drama unprecedented in its all-Arizona entrepreneurial origins, will be publicly debuting the cast, crew, investors for the first time ever at PHX Startup Week. This incredibly unlikely story tells the tale of how the audacious dream to make this upcoming movie became reality.

After a two-year odyssey in search of “un-Hollywood” financing, "There and Back" became the first-ever movie funded by Arizona Angel Investors — Tucson’s Desert Angels — and the first in modern times entirely produced in Arizona through a private equity investment offering.

"There and Back" is Marcus's sixth feature film, his first away from Hollywood, and his most exhilarating production ever. A goal was to work with emerging all-Arizona talent on both sides of the camera and we did just that — for 3,000 wild miles over the course of two unforgettable months

This session will feature in-person appearances by the stars of the film, the Angel Investors, some of the 100+ Arizonans involved in the production, and premieres of our first behind-the-scenes videos and our first trailer.

Generosity in Startup Land—It Is Not Just About Doing Good”
Not to reveal too much but let’s start with: Rule Number One: hire people like Dan Tyre. Rule Number Two: do your best not to violate Rule Number One.

Dan Tyre
After a 30 year business career, last year I changed my mission and purpose.  My guiding principal for the next 30 years is to do the most good in world.  I am committed to leveraging my connections, influence, experience and economic power to having the most impact on the most people to improve the world.  I learned this principal from my 22 year old son, who like many millennials learned the lesson of living with purpose as an early adult. Doing good things for as many people as you can is super fun, meaningful and rewarding, and anyone can start today if you want.

Your 2016 Action Plan: Creating Clarity From Chaos

Business is messy. You started this company because you recognized a problem you could solve, so you have no trouble spotting issues and opportunities. But as a company grows, you get more customers, hire more people, go up against more competition, and those issues and ideas start turning into a never-ending to-do list. You can’t keep up, it’s impossible to do everything. So where do you start? What should you focus on? How do you make sure nothing slips through the cracks? Chris Ronzio, founder of Organize Chaos, leads a 1 hour workshop to help turn your ideas into action.

Owning the Micromoments Of Customer Experience
If you've been a marketing or sales professional for the past decade, you'll have noticed how immensely the digital landscape has changed. Even the past five years have witnessed a tremendous paradigm shift in how consumers use mobile devices to make purchasing decisions. This new normal, in which companies have mere seconds, or "micromoments" has Google as termed them, to capture and hold a consumer's attention, is shaking up the entire marketing process, and it's critical that you meet the challenge head on. In this session, learn about the four key micromoments you need to own to create an experience which results in higher total lifetime value from your customers.

John Gough
Hit the target for your customers: deliver what matters
Description:Too much advice about delivering great customer experiences is vague - just "wow" them. The problem (especially for start-ups) is that wowing every customer is unsustainable - it's expensive, time consuming, and hard to train employees to do. Instead, use some simple research methods and psychological "hacks" to understand what your customer really wants, and deliver it every time. Happy customers, better processes.

Wayne Neale
The path to great customer experiences.Products and technology are becoming more and more competitive and not creating the competitive advantage they once did. Products and technology can be duplicated very quickly and inexpensively. What matters most today is the customer experience. Differentiation around customer experience will make the companies of tomorrow more competitive, more profitable and their customers’ more loyal. In this session, learn the key elements that make a great customer experience and the key principles for creating customer experiences that are useful, usable, desirable and profitable.
